Organisers and their background
Mr Patrick
Desvaux de Marigny & Mr Laurent Le Bolloch have been organising
& sponsoring Kitesurf competitions & events for over 5 years.
Starting
with the Shandrani crossing & freestyle competition, this takes
place every year in July, where the top kiteboarders from Europe &
Hawaii have attended giving the event a real boost concerning
international media coverage, putting Mauritius on the international
kitesurfing map.
The organisers run a local competition called
The kite League which started in Sep 04. Tourists & residents have
participated in these contests which have been held around the Island.
They
imported the Number 1 kiteboarding brand; encouraged & help to set
up kitesurf schools around Mauritius 4 here & 1 in Rodrigues. One
of these schools has helped to train Mauritian with an IKO certificate
(kitesurf teacher).
Recently, the organisers met Mrs Valerie
IMBERT, responsible for marketing APAVOU HOTELS, M. Kris ARMOOGUM
(Director for Indian Resort) and Felix NOLLMANN (responsible for club
mistral at Indian Resort) and decided to work with them on a unique
wave contest : Mauritius Kite Surf International Competition 2006
Advantages for Mauritian destination
Further
to the « Assises du tourisme » and various conversations with the MTPA,
it has been noted that the ministry of tourism wants to diversify its
“sea, sun and sand” tourism and to incite people to travel during low
season. Organizing low season events was one of the strategies put
forward.
Mauritius already has a very good reputation amongst
kite surfers (One Eye spot at Le Morne) We, currently, aren’t able to
attract them because of the security infrastructure which isn’t
sufficient. This is why we came up with these propositions namely the
contest and the setting up of a special security at Le Morne on a
longer run.
Our goal when organizing this contest is to
promote Mauritius on a different point of view, to flatten low season
by also arousing the need for kite surfers to include Mauritius in
their annual world tour later.
Participants: Will take part = 10 of the best international wave riders + 2 Mauritian.
Description of proposed contest: Mauritius Kite Surf International Competition 2006
The
Wave contest is planned for Sep 2006 (from the 20/09/06 to the 10/10/06
– because for proper conditions, we need a waiting period), located at
Le Morne. The kiters will choose the best days according to the weather
conditions to ride.
This contest will be the first of its
kind. The location Le Morne already has a reputation for being in the
top 2 kite surf destinations, in the world.
The
competition will take place on the “one eye” reef where the surf is the
best, there will be no judges only 4 TV Video camera men who are
filming & after a good amount of filming the riders will judge
themselves, at the end announcing the riders who did the best in each
category. We need to install 4 chairs in front of the reefs.
This
Wave contest will have a huge impact in the kitesurf community all the
Kitesurf media will be interested in this contest making Mauritius a
must for every kitesurfer. |
