I'm shortly moving to Jo'Burg for a year or two on business and would really appreciate any help you might be able to give me regarding kite spots locally and how easy it is to get to places like Durban for the w/e ?

I'm literally starting from zero info right now beyond having heard about Vaal Dam and already owning a couple of Spowy's Cyclone boards !

What sort of kite sizes are good for Vaal; are there better spots locally for a quick afternoon?

How long's the drive to Durban and what sort of kite sizes should I be looking at there ?

Hope you guys and girls can help !!

Cheers,

Ben

Watup Ben

Well what you need up in Gauteng, Jo'burg and PTA is patience ALOT of it, mate it's frustrating most of the time, it's probably the least windiest place on EARTH!! We usually venture to sterkfontein dam, about 3 hrs drive from Joburg , awesome dam to kite, but you can drive all that way and still have no wind, just depends on the time of year!!

There's also a few dams around, namely Bronkhorstspruit very close by about 2 hrs drive from joburg , not sure about the vaal, but it's close enough for you to drive out to for the day... KITE sizes, the best performers would be a 12 or 16 BOW kite, i've seen 16 C's out on the water and they don't go aswell as the bow kites, but in the end it all depends on individual skill.

INLAND KITESURFING IS- "like selling ice to an eskimo"

if u get a 19 Flysurfer u would be able to kite inland with no problems. well aslong as the wind stays under 20knots, or you might find yourself jumping to the coast. lol. you can fly is 9knots with a flysurfer with out any hassles. if you need one give inland kitesurfing a ring the guys name is Degald 082 449 8463 or 084 519 3205
