A very big thank you to the guy who rescued my board (a Cabrihna Prodigy) from way offshore and returned it to me in the shallows at Kite Beach on Sunday (4th Jan) afternoon at around 1pm.
I was probably around 300 meters out from the beach when I saw a very big shark fin no more than 10 meters in front of me. I decided to turn around and head back in, but being a bit of a novice, and somewhat nervous at seeing the shark, I screwed up the turn and whipped out. My hart rate is now going through the roof as I’m floundering around in the water knowing there is a very big fish near by. I managed to relaunch the kite but by then I couldn’t see my board anywhere, and I was very reluctant to hang around looking for it. So I body dragged back to the beach hoping like hell the shark wasn’t hungry and I didn’t look like lunch!
I made it back in and was stoked to turn around a see a guy on his way in with my board under his arm. Thank you!!
So now I’m curious, how often do you people see sharks when boarding out there? This was my first time boarding off Kite Beach and I run smack bang into one. It certainly gives me plenty of motivation to increase my skill level so I spent most of my time on top of the water and not in it! |
