Grootdraai Dam, Standerton (185 km from central Johannesburg)
Prevailing Wind Conditions http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=63616
Predominately NW to W. This direction usually starts at 9am in a NE direction and strengthens towards mid day switching towards NW/W. It can be gusty at times, but occasional gusts can really stretch your arms.
Easterly wind at this dam is rare, but is always very steady, and if around in the late afternoon, usually reaches gale force. This phenomenon occurs when a strong high pressure resides just off the Mozambique coast.
Southerly wind is usually post frontal wind, and is very cold and starts strong but dies fast. Wind strength here is often a few notches higher than at the Vaal dam; with cleaner, stronger wind often the order of the day. On occasion the wind here is even better than Sterkfontein Dam in the Drakensberg.
Camping Facilities
Camping overnight will cost you R25 per vehicle Full ablution available from 2 separate buildings. Electricity is also available at specific spots near the ablution blocks. Braai facilities are also available, with fire wood being sold at the entrance gate. The camping area is fairly level with ample tree cover available. The trees offer decent shade in the heat of summer, and break the wind for your camp site.
Directions
From Johannesburg, take N3 Natal highway until just past Heidelburg (½ hour travel) Take Standerton offramp, and turn left at T-junction to go East (1 hour travel)
When entering Standerton (after driving under bridge), turn left at 1st robot you encounter, and right and the T-junction Continue through next overhead robot, travelling out of town Approximately 5 kilometres outside town, turn right into a dirt road, which takes you to the dam's camping area (1st road right after water affairs sign and dirt road After the pay gate, turn left to go to the smaller bay area which has better equipped camping facilities and more tree cover, or continue straight to get to the boating area which gives you access to the larger bay which has stronger more steady wind.
