Description: The Strand is an excellent spot and there are plenty of facilities. The only disadvantage is all the blocks of flats right on the beach front.
Rigging Area: Some of the blocks of flats near the Springbok Cafe, and the Monaco Cafe have grassed areas, which are good to rig up on. Otherwise it’s the tar pavement or the beach.
Wind Conditions: SW: Port Tack When the SW blows, head for the Strand. Southerly off the point at Steenbras produces the steadiest winds. If its up at 11am get there. SE: Lousy Port Tack
The South Easter is very gusty at the Strand, possibly due to all the high rise buildings.
NW: Starboard Tack
Wave Conditions: Opposite the Springbok Cafe there is often a nice wave, which is a pleasure to jump. The sets are quite well spaced. There is also a reef opposite the Super Tube, about 500m out. When the swell is big enough, there is an excellent wave to gybe on, right out in the bay.
If you feel like a long sail, you could go all the way to Maccassar, and I have sailed all the way to Gordon’s Bay as well.
Directions: See Surfer’s Corner; however, when you get to the busy road, turn left, instead of right, (sea on your right) and drive until you get to a traffic circle. Take the right turn and park.
