Trafalgar

Trafalgar (745 km from central Johannesburg)

Prevailing Wind Conditions

Predominately
NE or SW. The prevailing wind here is similar to the entire Natal coast
line. NE when a high pressure resides in the Mozambique channel, it
starts gradually in the morning and strengthens towards mid-day, and
starts tapering off towards the late afternoon. SW occurs when a low
pressure advances up the coast line, usually in the form of a cold
front. SW tends to start off early in the morning or continue from the
night before, and dies towards the afternoon, unless the front has just
hit.

Easterly wind is onshore and is usually accompanied by
heavy rain. It is not a good direction to sail in, as it tends to be
very gusty, and makes it very difficult to get out past the breakers
which are usually very large with the on-shore wind.

If the wind
is straight west, as it usually starts off when its going to blow SW,
the wind is gusty in shore owing to the slight offshore tendency. The
surf in these conditions is near perfect, but it is wiser to resist
till later when the wind is more side shore, and the danger of being
blown offshore reduced.

This spot is only suited to SW and large surf; NE makes this spot very choppy and unpleasant to sail.
